History of Sutton Coldfield
The city of Sutton Coldfield in England has a long and rich history dating back to the AngloSaxon era. The name “Sutton Coldfield” is thought to derive from this period, when the area was known as Sudtone, meaning “south farmstead”.
The area was recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086 as belonging to the Bishop of Chester, and it remained under ecclesiastical control until the 1530s. In 1528, the Bishop of Coventry and Lichfield leased the manor to Sir Edward Ferrers, who in turn sold it to the Holt family in 1538.
The Holt family held the manor for nearly a century, during which time they built Sutton Hall, the oldest surviving building in the city. The Holts were staunch Catholics, and during the English Reformation their home became a refuge for Catholic priests.
In 1642, the first Battle of Edgehill was fought near Sutton Coldfield. It was one of the opening engagements of the English Civil War, and ended in a draw.
In 1659, the second Battle of Naseby was fought nearby, again resulting in a draw. However, the battle was a significant victory for the Parliamentarian army, as it effectively ended the Royalist resistance in England.
