History of Superior
Superior, Wisconsin is a city in, and the county seat of, Douglas County in the state of Wisconsin. The city is located on the southwestern shore of Lake Superior, the largest of the Great Lakes. The population was 27,244 at the 2010 census.
Superior’s natural harbor and proximity to the Great Lakes has made it a fruitful area for maritime activity since the city’s founding. The first recorded voyage through the Superior Waterway was made by French explorer Daniel Grizeau in 1679, and soon after, fur trading posts were established in the area. In 1685, the French established the fort of La Baie des Puants (Stinking Bay) at the mouth of the Nemadji River, which they used as a base for exploring the western Great Lakes.
The French continued to use the Superior Waterway for trade and exploration until 1763, when the area was ceded to the British in the Treaty of Paris following the Seven Years’ War. The British used the Superior Waterway for fur trade and military transportation throughout the 18th century.
In 1783, the United States gained control of the area in the Treaty of Paris following the American Revolution, and soon began to develop the Superior Waterway for commercial shipping. The first American steamship to sail on the Great Lakes, the WalkintheWater, began operating on the Superior Waterway in 1818.
During the 19th century, the city of Superior rapidly developed as a major shipping and manufacturing center due to its natural harbor and access to the Great Lakes. Lumber, iron ore, and grain were shipped from Superior to other Great Lakes ports, and the city became known as the “Gateway to the Northwest.”
The Soo Locks were constructed in Sault Ste. Marie in 1855, which allowed vessels to bypass the rapids of the St. Marys River and led to an increase in maritime traffic on the Great Lakes. The opening of the locks spurred further development of the Superior Waterway, and by the late 19th century, over 1,000 ships were passing through the waterway each year.
The city of Superior was officially incorporated in 1854, and its growth continued throughout the second half of the 19th century. The population reached nearly 10,000 by 1880, and the city became the regional center for commerce and industry.
The city continued to grow in the early 20th century, reaching a peak population of over 100,000 in 1960. Since then, the city’s population has declined slightly, but Superior remains an important maritime center on the Great Lakes.
