History of Sunningdale

The village of Sunningdale in the English county of Berkshire has a long and interesting history. The first record of Sunningdale is from the 12th century, when it was known as Soningesdala, which means ‘valley of the song birds’. The village grew up around the old Springfield Manor House, which was built in the 13th century. The Manor House was the home of the de Springe family, who were members of the local gentry. The de Springes were a wealthy and powerful family, and they owned much of the land in the area.

In the 14th century, the de Springes built a chapel on their land, which was dedicated to St. Nicholas. This chapel became the parish church for Sunningdale, and it is still standing today.

In the 15th century, the Manor House was remodelled and enlarged. At this time, the de Springes also built a new gatehouse, which can still be seen today.

During the 16th century, the de Springes sold the Manor House and the estate to the Pitt family. The Pitts were another wealthy and powerful family, and they owned several properties in the area. The Pitts remodelled the Manor House again, and they also built a new wing onto the house.

In the 17th century, the Pitt family sold the estate to the Duke of Newcastle. The Duke of Newcastle was a very wealthy man, and he made a number of changes to the estate. He built a new garden, which was designed by the famous landscape gardener, Capability Brown. He also built a number of new outbuildings, including a stable block and a coach house.

In the 18th century, the estate was sold again, this time to Sir Henry Fletcher. Sir Henry Fletcher was a barrister, and he didn’t make any changes to the estate.

In the 19th century, the estate was bought by a man called Augustus Clifford. Augustus Clifford was a wealthy man, and he made a number of changes to the property. He demolished the old Manor House and replaced it with a new mansion, which was designed by the famous architect, Sir Charles Barry. He also built a number of new outbuildings, including a library, a chapel, and a greenhouse.

In the 20th century, the estate was bought by a man called Colonel Frank Alderson. Colonel Alderson was a military man, and he didn’t make any changes to the estate.

In the 21st century, the estate is still owned by the Alderson family. The estate covers an area of about 3,000 acres, and includes a number of historic buildings and gardens.
