History of Sun Valley
Sun Valley, Idaho is known for its luxury ski resort, but the area was originally settled as a ranching community in the 1860s. It wasn’t until the early 20th century that the establishment of a ski area and Union Pacific Railroad spur line brought tourism and development to the area.
The first recorded ski descent in Sun Valley occurred in 1915, on Proctor Mountain above the presentday resort. In 1936, the Sun Valley Ski Club was founded, and the first chairliftserved ski area in the United States was established on Dollar Mountain the following year.
With the onset of World War II, Sun Valley’s growth stalled as the nation’s attention turned elsewhere. However, the resort remained open and even thrived thanks to a influx of celebrities and Hollywood royalty who came to escape the war effort.
After the war, Sun Valley continued to grow in popularity as a premier winter destination. In the 1960s, the Sun Valley Company began to expand the resort’s summer offerings as well, with the addition of golf courses, tennis courts, and a new hotel.
