History of Sumter
Sumter is a city in South Carolina, United States. The population was 23,929 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Sumter County.
The city is the center of the Sumter, South Carolina metropolitan statistical area (Sumter MSA), which includes all of Sumter County. The metro area had a 2010 population of 107,456.
Founded in 1740, Sumter is considered the oldest interior town in South Carolina. The city served as the capital of the Confederacy during the American Civil War, due to its strategic location near the intersection of three major railways.
During the war, the city was defended by a large number of Confederate fortifications. These included Fort Watson, Fort Sumter, and Battery Gervais. After the Ordinance of Secession was passed in 1860, Sumter was one of the first places in the South to be captured by the Union Army.
In 1865, the Union Army destroyed most of the city during General William T. Sherman’s March to the Sea. After the war, Sumter rebuilt itself. The cotton industry, which was the city’s economic foundation prior to the war, resumed.
The city’s population grew during the late 19th and early 20th centuries as a result of the growing textile industry. Sumter became a hub for the textile industry in the early 20th century, with several mills operating in the city.
The city’s economy declined in the latter part of the 20th century as the textile industry began to move offshore. A number of Sumter’s textile mills closed in the 1990s and 2000s.
