It is situated on top of the Second Watchung Mountain and is bordered by Millburn to the south, Livingston to the west, Berkeley Heights to the north, and Chatham to the east. Summit has a population of approximately 21,000 people and covers an area of just over 6 square miles.

The city has a rich history dating back to the 18th century when it was originally settled by Europeans. Summit was originally known as the Village of Summit, but was renamed in 1869 when it was incorporated as a city. The city is home to a number of historic landmarks and buildings, many of which are protected and listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Some of the most notable landmarks in Summit include the Grand Summit Hotel, the Beacon Hill Club, and the Wick House. History of Summit

Summit is a city located in Union County, New Jersey, United States. As of the 2010 United States Census, the city’s population was 21,457,[10][11][12]reflecting an increase of 333 (+1.6%) from the 21,124 counted in the 2000 Census,[13] which had in turn increased by 1,374 (+7.0%) from the 19,750 counted in the 1990 Census.[14]

Summit had the 16thhighest per capita income in the state as of the 2000 census. Summit was ranked 277th on the 2010 Money magazine list of America’s Best Places to Live.[15]

The region in which Summit is located was bought from the Lenape Native Americans in 1664.Summit’s earliest European settlers came to the area around the year 1710. The original name of Summit was “Turkey Hill” to distinguish it from nearby “Chicken Hill”. Legend has it that George Washington spent eight nights at a inn on Turkey Hill, which would later become summit.

In 1837, local dignitaries and citizens gathered to hear the reading of a proclamation by President Jackson declaring Summit as a township. In 1869, Summit was incorporated as a city.

During the late nineteenth century, Summit served as a summer retreat for wealthy New Yorkers. In addition, several wealthy families built mansions along what is now known as Prospect Street, making it one of the largest collection of Gilded Age mansions in the country. Many of these homes, including Peter Keeney’s Aladdin House and Waldeck, are included on the National Register of Historic Places.

The city is notable for being the headquarters of Merck & Co.,:/ ˈ m ɜːr k /, a pharmaceutical company, which was started in the city in 1891. In 2015, the company announced it would be moving its headquarters to Kenilworth, about 7 miles (11 km) north of Summit, in 2017.[16][17]

In 2018, New Jersey Monthly magazine ranked Summit as the 13th best place to live in New Jersey for its “welleducated population” and “familyfriendly vibe”.[18]
