Stretford is a town in Greater Manchester, England. The town lies on flat ground between the River Mersey and the Manchester Ship Canal, 4 miles (6.4 km) southwest of Manchester city centre, 3.8 miles (6.1 km) from Sale and 11.7 miles (18.8 km) from Warrington. Stretford is bordered by the Metropolitan Borough of Trafford to the north, east and south, and by the City of Manchester to the west. Historically in Lancashire, Stretford was incorporated as a municipal borough in 1871.
The River Mersey forms part of the town’s western boundary, and the Manchester Ship Canal runs through its southern end, linking Stretford to the Manchester Docks. The Bridgewater Canal also passes through the town.
Stretford has a town centre with several outlets including the Stretford Mall, Trafford Centre and an Arndale Centre. There are also many bars, clubs and restaurants. History of Stretford
Stretford is a town in Trafford, Greater Manchester, England, on the flats of the River Mersey and adjacent to the historic county boundary between Lancashire and Cheshire. The town contains Stretford Mall and an Emily Dickinson Museum. Stretford is recorded as Streetforda in 1276, and was known for its ford across the Mersey giving access to a market on the opposite side of the river. Despite being on the southern bank of the River Mersey, Stretford was in the historic county of Lancashire until 1974.
The Manchester, South Junction and Altrincham Railway (MSJAR) reached Stretford in 1849 and quickly switched the focus of the area from the ford to the railway station. A tramway was built in 1901 connecting Stretford to Altrincham and Bury. Stretford became a municipal borough in 1894, including Bucklow Rural District and part of Bucklow Urban District. In 1931 the borough was enlarged by gaining Sale and Urmston Urban District, and part of Bucklow Rural District.
In 1933 it was granted a charter of incorporation as a municipal borough, which was subsequently amended in 1935. The Corporation of Stretford was abolished in 1974 and the town was brought within the metropolitan borough of Trafford. Historically part of Lancashire, Stretford originally grew around the ford crossing the River Mersey. The Mersey was tidal in this area, so the ford was used to bring livestock across to graze on the pasture on the other side of the river.
A market was established on the Cheshire side of the ford, and Stretford became a convenient place to stop for travellers between Manchester and Chester. The passage of the turnpike road in 1755 improved transportation links, and by the early 19th century Stretford was a prosperous coaching town. The opening of the Stockport branch of the Manchester, South Junction and Altrincham Railway in 1849 brought further prosperity, and the focus of the town shifted from the ford to the railway station.
A tramway connecting Stretford to Altrincham and Bury was built in 1901, and Stretford became a municipal borough in 1894.
