The area is rich in coal deposits and was once a major contributor to the coal mining industry in the United States.

The city was founded in 1868 by Jacob Bartholomew and is named after William P. Streator who was an early investor in the area. The city was originally platted as a square mile and was incorporated as a city in 1869. The first coal mine in the area was opened in 1870 and the population of the city grew rapidly.
