The city of Streator is located in north central Illinois approximately 100 miles southwest of Chicago. It lies within LaSalle and Livingston counties. The area is rich in coal deposits and was once a major contributor to the coal mining industry in the United States.

The city was founded in 1868 by Jacob Bartholomew and is named after William P. Streator who was an early investor in the area. The city was originally platted as a square mile and was incorporated as a city in 1869. The first coal mine in the area was opened in 1870 and the population of the city grew rapidly. In the early 20th century, the city continued to grow and became home to many manufacturing plants. The coal mining industry began to decline in the 1950s and by the 1970s most of the mines had closed.
