Stocksbridge is a town in Sheffield, England. It lies in the upper Don Valley in the north of the city, and has a population of about 18,000. The town is twinned with the German town of Bochum.
The town is most famous for its steelworks, which have been in operation since the early 19th century. The steelworks are now owned by Tata Steel and employ about 1,200 people.

The area now known as Stocksbridge was first inhabited around 4000 BC[1] during the Mesolithic period when people from continental Europe started to migrate to what is now Britain. Stocksbridge is situated in a landscape full of ridges and valleys which would have been ideal for these early people as they were able to easily find food and shelter.
The first evidence of settlement comes from the Bronze Age when a burial mound was built on what is now Bradfield Ridges. This was followed by the construction of a hillfort on B 7075 during the Iron Age. Both of these monuments are now Scheduled Ancient Monuments.
The Roman occupation of Britain started in 43 AD and the nearest settlement to Stocksbridge was at Templeborough in Sheffield. Although there is no direct evidence, it is likely that people from the local area would have interacted with the Romans.
After the Romans left Britain in 410 AD, the area came under the control of the AngloSaxons. The name ‘Stocksbridge’ is first recorded in 1086 in the Domesday Book when it was spelt ‘Stochesbrige’. The name probably refers to a bridge across the River Don which was used by people travelling between Sheffield and Barnsley.
During the Medieval period, the main industry in the area was sheep rearing and wool production. There was also some mining for lead and coal. The population of the village grew slowly and by the time of the first national census in 1801 it had reached just over 500.
The Industrial Revolution changed Stocksbridge dramatically as it became a centre for iron and steel production. The first ironworks were built in 1784 and by the mid19th century there were seven different works in the town. The population grew rapidly, reaching 3,000 by 1851.
