History of Stillwater (Oklahoma)
Stillwater is a city in Payne County, Oklahoma, United States. It is located about 70 miles (110 km) northeast of Oklahoma City in northcentral Oklahoma. As of 2019, the estimated population of Stillwater was 47,40. It is the county seat of Payne County and the principal city of the Stillwater Micropolitan Statistical Area which had a population in 2010 of 78,399.
Stillwater was founded during the Land Run of April 22, 1889, when Oklahoma Territory was first opened to EuropeanAmerican settlement. It was one of six towns established in what became Payne County, as government officials laid out a plan for communities based on a rectangular Public Land Survey System. Stillwater received its name in a roundabout way; when asked by a railroad engineer what he should name the stop, George W. Stillwell said “call it Stillwater”. By the time the Post Office opened on May 28, 1889, the name had been formally changed to Stillwater.
The city charter was adopted on August 24, 1889. Growth of the new community was steady until the Land Run of September 16, 1893, which opened up the neighboring Cherokee Outlet to white settlement. With this second major influx of people, Stillwater’s population nearly quadrupled in size and the town became an agricultural and stock raising center with a number of new mills and grain elevators.
The economy of Stillwater benefited immensely from the invention of the cotton gin by local resident Eli Whitney in 1793. With the production of cotton made more efficient, large scale commercial agriculture and cotton milling became profitable ventures. In the early 20th century, Stillwater was Cockerell’s Creamery, which produced some of the best butter in the country.
The city also became a center for higher education with the founding of Oklahoma Agricultural and Mechanical College (now Oklahoma State University) in 1890. OSU’s campus has grown since those early days and now boasts over 35,000 students, making it one of the largest universities in the region.
Stillwater is home to many different businesses and industries, but perhaps the most notable is the aircraft manufacturing company, Beechcraft. Beechcraft has been in business since 1932 and has been located in Stillwater since 1978. With over 2,000 employees, Beechcraft is one of the largest employers in the city.
Despite its relatively small size, Stillwater has a rich history that is reflected in its many buildings and structures. The Stillwater Historic Preservation Society was formed in 1974 to preserve and protect the city’s historic resources.
