The city of Staveley is located in the county of Derbyshire in England. The city has a long and rich history dating back to the Roman period. The first mention of the city dates back to the year 79 AD when the Roman historian Tacitus wrote about the city in his book Agricola. The city was known by the name of Stanuwicorum at that time. The name of the city is derived from the Old English words stan for stone and wic for settlement. The city was an important settlement during the Roman period as it was located on the Roman road known as Ryknild Street. The city continued to prosper during the AngloSaxon period and became the capital of the Kingdom of Mercia. The city was known by the name of Stavelei during this time. The city was sacked by the Vikings in the year 874 AD but soon recovered and prospered once again. The city was an important market town during the medieval period and was also the seat of the Bishop of Chester. The city was severely damaged during the English Civil War but was soon rebuilt.
