History of Staunton
The history of Staunton, Virginia, as an independent city began in 1871 when it was separated from Augusta County and established as a town by an act of the Virginia General Assembly. The town was named for Lady Rebecca Staunton, wife of Colonial GovernorSir William Gooch.
The town’s strategic location along the main northsouth trade route through the Shenandoah Valley and its access to the Shenandoah River made it an important economic and political center in the region from its earliest days.
During the American Civil War, Staunton served as a hub of activity for Confederate forces, especially after the Virginia Secession Convention adjourned to the city in 1861 and General Stonewall Jackson made it his headquarters in 1862. After the war, the town’s importance as a trade center declined as railroads bypassed it and replaced river traffic as the primary method of transportation.
Staunton remained a sleepy Southern town until the mid20th century when it began to experience population and economic growth following the establishment of Mary Baldwin College in 1842, the opening of the Shenandoah Valley Academy in 1924, and later, the construction of Interstate 81 which made the city more easily accessible to outside visitors and investors.
