History of Staten Island
The history of Staten Island is a long and varied one, dating back to the days when it was inhabited by Native Americans. It was later colonized by the Dutch, and then became a part of New York City when it was first established. Since then, it has gone through many changes, both good and bad, and has become the home of many different people from all walks of life.
Staten Island was originally inhabited by the Lenape Native Americans. The name “Staten Island” comes from the Dutch explorer, Abel Tasman, who was the first European to see the island in 1624. He named it Staaten Eylandt, after the Dutch Parliament, because it reminded him of home.
The Dutch were the first to settle on Staten Island, establishing a colony there in 1661. However, they were soon forced out by the British, who took over the island in 1664. The British then divided the island into four separate counties: Kings, Richmond, Suffolk, and Queens.
Richmond County was the site of the first permanent European settlement on Staten Island, which was established in 1670. In 1776, during the Revolutionary War, the Battle of Staten Island took place on the island, resulting in a British victory.
After the war, the island became a popular place for affluent New Yorkers to build summer homes. However, this came to an end in the mid19th century when the island was transformed into a mostly rural area with farms and small villages.
This all changed in 1898 when Staten Island became a borough of New York City. This led to a population boom, as people from all over the city came to live on the island. In the ensuing years, many suburban developments were built, turning Staten Island into the densely populated area it is today.
