History of State College
State College is a borough in Centre County in the U.S. Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. It is the largest borough in Centre County and home to the campus of Pennsylvania State University.
State College developed from a village to a borough to serve the needs of the Pennsylvania State University. The earliest known reference to the village is in the 1806 report of Centre County completed by Pennsylvania state commissioners. It is listed as “Grange,” named after the local Grange Hall. The first recorded reference to the village as “State College” came in a letter from Penn State president George W. Atherton to Pennsylvania Governor James Beaver in 1873. Atherton urged Beaver to use his influence in Harrisburg to help get State College included in the new Pennsylvania State University. The legislature agreed, and the village became the home of Pennsylvania’s only landgrant university in 1874.
State College expanded rapidly in the early 20th century. The population doubled between 1900 and 1920, and doubled again between 1920 and 1930. The growth was fueled by the establishment of the Pennsylvania State College campus in the borough and the arrival of hundreds of faculty members and their families. The borough’s population peaked at 42,034 in 1960.
The town has a rich history with many interesting stories and interesting people. Local historian Paul Gordon has written several books on the history of State College, including A History of Centre County, Pennsylvania (2009) and Tales from the Centre of the Universe: Stories from State College and Penn State (2015).
