History of Springfield (Illinois)
In the mid1830s, settlers from Kentucky, Tennessee and Virginia began moving to the Sangamo country in search of fertile farmland. The influx of new settlers created a population boom and led to the formation of new towns, including Springfield.
The city of Springfield was officially founded in 1835 by John Kelly, a politician and businessman from Kentucky. Kelly named the city after his hometown of Springfield, Kentucky.
Springfield quickly became a regional center for trade and politics. The city was designated as the county seat of Sangamon County in 1839 and soon became a hub for stagecoaches and riverboats.
In 1837, the Illinois State Capitol was built in Springfield, making it the state’s de facto capital (the state’s official capital would later be moved to Chicago). The city continued to grow in size and importance in the following years.
In 1861, Springfield was the site of the first presidential debate between Abraham Lincoln and Stephen Douglas. The city also played a significant role in the American Civil War, serving as a training ground for Union soldiers and as a base of operations for General Ulysses S. Grant.
After the war, Springfield entered a period of economic decline. However, the city began to rebound in the late 19th century with the help of the newly created Illinois State Fair. The fair brought thousands of visitors to Springfield each year and helped to revitalize the city’s economy.
