Spring Green is a city in south central Wisconsin, United States. The population was 2,638 at the 2010 census. Spring Green is the county seat of Sauk County.
The city took its name from the springs found in the area. Early settler Isaac Stoddard is credited with finding the springs and building the first cabin next to them in 1829. As word of the springs spread, more and more people came to the area to stay in the many hotels and boardinghouses that were soon built.
The Springs Corporation was formed in 1896 to protect the springs and develop them into a tourist destination. The Original Springs Hotel was built in 1901 and was later replaced by the presentday House on the Rock Resort.
Today, Spring Green is a popular tourist destination known for its scenic beauty, outdoor recreation, and familyfriendly attractions. The House on the Rock Resort is the city’s largest employer and features a championship golf course, spa, indoor and outdoor pools, and fine dining. Other popular attractions include the American Players Theatre, Taliesin, the Frank Lloyd Wright Visitor Center, and the House on the Rock Attraction.

If you’re a fan of Wright’s work, you’ll definitely want to tour Taliesin, his former home and school of architecture. The Taliesin estate includes several Wrightdesigned buildings, as well as beautiful gardens and grounds to explore. You can take a guided tour of the estate, or if you’re feeling adventurous, rent a bike and explore on your own.

History of Spring Green
First settled by Daniel Whitney in 1804, Spring Green is a village in Sauk County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 1,628 at the 2010 census. Spring Green is home to two Frank Lloyd Wrightdesigned houses, Hillside Home School and Taliesin, the headquarters of the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation. The American Players Theatre, the oldest professional theater company in Wisconsin, is located in Spring Green.
The village was originally known as “Muses’ Rest” by Daniel Whitney and his family. The name was inspired by the many songbirds that the Whitneys heard while they were the first settlers in the area. However, when post offices were established in Wisconsin in 1837, the village was renamed “Spring Green” as there was already another “Muses’ Rest” in the state.
In 1859, the Wisconsin Legislature created the Village of Spring Green from the southern half of the Town of Spring Green. The new village encompassed about 1,875 acres (7.6 km2) and its first election was held on June 7, 1859.
The Spring Green area was attractive to settlers because of its abundant clear springs, which contrasted with the “stagnant, often brackish water found in other Wisconsin settlements.” These springs also helped establish Spring Green as a health resort in the late 19th century. Visitors came to the area seeking relief from respiratory ailments, and some even built summer homes here.
One of the most popular tourist attractions in Spring Green is the House on the Rock, which began as a private residence designed by Alex Jordan Jr. in the 1940s. Jordan was inspired by the design of Frank Lloyd Wright’s Fallingwater and set out to build a home that was even more audacious. The resulting structure, which is perched on a 60foot (18 m) chimney of rock, features a number of intricate, eccentric features, including a 200foot (61 m) sea creature sculpture, a 148foot (45 m) carousel, and a room with a 13,000pipe organ. The House on the Rock is now a museum and one of the most popular tourist destinations in Wisconsin.
The Spring Green area was also home to two of Frank Lloyd Wright’s most famous residences: Hillside Home School and Taliesin. Designed in 1902, Hillside Home School was built as a boarding school for the children of Wright’s clients. However, the school was plagued by financial problems and closed in 1908. Wright then used the building as his personal residence and studio until 1911 when he moved to Taliesin, just down the road. Wright continued to live and work at Taliesin until his death in 1959. Today, both Hillside Home School and Taliesin are owned by the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation and operate as museums.
The American Players Theatre, Wisconsin’s oldest professional theater company, was founded in Spring Green in 1979. The company produces a season of classic and contemporary plays each year, which are performed in the company’s outdoor amphitheater.
Spring Green is also home to the Wisconsin Riverside Resort, a beautiful lodge situated on the Wisconsin River. The resort features a variety of amenities, including a golf course, swimming pool, and tennis courts.
