History of Southampton
The city of Southampton dates back over 900 years, making it one of the oldest continuouslyinhabited cities in the United Kingdom. The city has a rich and varied history, from its days as a prominent medieval port to its more recent role as a gateway to the global cruise industry.
The first mention of Southampton comes in the AngloSaxon Chronicle, which records that the city was founded by King Alfred the Great in 9th century. Alfred had been driven out of Wessex by the Viking invaders, but regained control of the city in 913 and made it his base of operations.
