History of South Orange Village
South Orange Village is a township in Essex County, New Jersey, United States. As of the 2010 United States Census, the township’s population was 6,083,[8][9][10] reflecting a decline of 36 from the 6,119 counted in the 2000 Census, which had in turn declined by 859 from the 6,978 counted in the 1990 Census.[21]
It was set off from Newark Township on April 1, 1869, and became independent as the Township of South Orange Village on January 26, 1904.[22][23] Portions of the township were taken to form Maplewood Township (April 14, 1861), Orange (April 13, 1872) and West Orange (November 27, 1904).[24]
South Orange was originally settled as part of Newark, measures taken by its founder, Robert Treat Paine, to prevent border disputes with neighboring settlements East Orange, Newark, and Elizabeth.[25] South Orange was initially a rural community, picturing farmsteads, open fields and large estates. Gradually, as transportation improved, the community became more urbanized, and a number of wealthy New Yorkers constructed mansions along what is now South Orange Avenue.[26] These homes attracted a wealthy pool of prospective home buyers, and with the introduction of streetcars in 1875, commuting to New York City became more attractive.
During the real estate boom of the 1920s, many more suburbanstyle homes were built throughout the township. The township population swelled to over 20,000 residents by 1930.[27] However, the Great Depression of the 1930s brought an end to the real estate boom, and many of the large estates were broken up and converted into smaller housing units. As industries began to move out of Newark in the 1950s, the township began to experience a decline in population and tax base. In 1960, the town was declared a “nonplace” by a Princeton sociologist because there were no identifiable landmarks or reason to visit the town.[28]
However, this began to change in the late 1960s and early 1970s, when town leaders made an effort to redevelop South Orange. Two major commercial districts were created: downtown South Orange, centered around the village train station; and the Valley, a collection of shops and businesses along South Orange Avenue. On July 1, 1974, the South Orange Village Center Mall opened across from the train station, providing a muchneeded boost to the town’s economy.[29]
The mall, along with the redevelopment of the downtown and Valley areas, has helped to reverse the town’s decline, and today South Orange is a thriving suburb with a diverse population and a vibrant downtown.
