South Elmsall is a former coal mining town in West Yorkshire, England. The town has a population of 9,000 and is located in the Metropolitan Borough of Wakefield. The town is situated on the A635 road between Barnsley and Wakefield.
The town was originally called Elm Woodstall, but the name was changed to South Elmsall when a northsouth railway line was built through the town in 1848. The railway brought economic growth to the town and it became a major coal mining centre. The coal mines were closed in the 1980s, but the town has since diversified its economy.
