History of South Charleston
South Charleston is a city in Kanawha County, West Virginia, United States that was founded in 1871 by John T. Laidley. He named the community South Charleston after the completion of the C&O Railroad from Charleston to Cincinnati. The city has a councilmanager form of government. The mayor is elected atlarge and the city council consists of six members, three from each of the city’s two wards.
The city of South Charleston was originally platted by Laidley in 1870. In 1871, the C&O Railroad reached the city, which resulted in an influx of new residents and businesses. The city’s first post office was established in 1871. The city was incorporated by the West Virginia Legislature in 1894. In the early 20th century, the city’s economy was largely based on coal mining and manufacturing. The town became known as “Chemical City” due to the large number of chemical plants located there. These plants included the Union Carbide and acetylene plant, which was the site of the 1968 West Virginia chemical spill.
The city’s population declined in the latter part of the 20th century as the coal industry declined. The city has made an effort to revitalize its downtown area in recent years. The city is home to the University of Charleston and several state government offices.
