History of Sonoma
The area today known as Sonoma, California was first inhabited by the Huichin (Wappo), a Native American tribe of the Akonash people who arrived in the area around 1,500 AD. The Huichin lived in small villages along the creek that runs through the town site, raising crops and hunting game. The area was first explored by Europeans in 1769, when Spanish soldiers led by Captain Gaspar de Portolà came through on their way north to establish the presidio and Mission San Francisco Solano in what is now the city of Vallejo.
In 1823, the Mexican government granted the lands around the mission to Mariano Guadalupe Vallejo, who had served as the area’s military commander. Vallejo built a rancho here, which he called La Plaza del Cuartel. When California became a state in 1850, Sonoma was one of its original 27 counties. The county seat was moved to Petaluma in 1858, and then to Santa Rosa in 1867.
Sonoma remained a sleepy agricultural backwater until the late 19th century, when an influx of settlers from the Midwest and East Coast began to transform the area into a thriving winegrowing region. The center of the Sonoma wine industry was the Buena Vista Winery, founded in 1857 by Hungarian Count Agoston Haraszthy.
Today, Sonoma is a popular tourist destination, known for its quaint smalltown atmosphere and beautiful scenery. The town is home to several historical landmarks, including the Mission San Francisco Solano, the Sonoma Plaza, and the Vallejo home. Visitors can also enjoy the many wineries and tasting rooms in the area, as well as the Sonoma Valley National Historic Park.
