History of Somerville (New Jersey)
The area now known as Somerville was settled in 1624 by Dutch and English settlers who purchased the land from the Lenape Indians. It was originally part of Bridgewater Township, and later became part of the Galloway Township. In 1709, the area was partitioned into Bridgewater, Newark, and Hunterdon Counties. Somerville was incorporated as a borough by an Act of the New Jersey Legislature on March 25, 1863, within Bridgewater Township and became part of Somerset County when it was formed on May 14, 1838, from parts of Middlesex County.
Somerville was originally known as Vealtown. The name may have derived from the mill that Thomas Veal, one of the town’s first settlers, built to grind grain for flour. Other sources attribute the name to one of two sons born to early settler Richard Savage and his wife Elizabeth. The son named Richard came of age and took over the family farm, while the other son, Thomas, moved to Pennsylvania. There, he developed Somerville, naming it after his grandfather Samuel Somerville.
Somerville grew steadily until the turn of the 19th century, when it began to attract industry. In 1809, the first factory was built in the town, and by 1834, there were six factories in operation.
