History of Solihull
The first evidence of Solihull being occupied dates back over 10,000 years ago when Mesolithic huntergatherers settled in the area. There is also evidence of Bronze and Iron Age settlers too.
The Domesday Book of 1086 shows that there was already a settlement here called Situne. This is thought to be a corruption of the original Celtic name for the area which was based on the soily hills (olvingas) that dominate the landscape.
Situne rapidly grew into a sizeable town and by 1220 it had been granted a charter to hold a weekly market. The town’s growth continued and by the 14th century it was one of Warwickshire’s largest settlements with a population of around 1,500.
