History of Soham
The following is a detailed article about the history of the city Soham in England.
Soham is a historic city located in the county of Cambridgeshire, England. The city has a rich history dating back to the Roman era. The name Soham derives from the Old English words “sōh” and “hām”, meaning “settlement on soh (a small stream)”.
The first recorded mention of the city was in the year 906 AD, when it was listed in the AngloSaxon Chronicle as a village called “Sohamærce”. The village was likely founded sometime in the late 5th or early 6th century.
The Domesday Book, a survey of England completed in 1086, lists Soham as a small village with a population of just over 100 people. However, by the 13th century the village had grown significantly, and had a population of around 1,000.
In 1226, the village was granted a charter by King Henry III, making it a formal town. This charter allowed the town to elect a mayor and other officials, and gave it certain legal and economic rights.
Throughout the medieval period, Soham was an important market town, known for its sheep and wool trade. The town also had a thriving brewery industry. In 1548, the town was struck by a serious fire which destroyed many of its buildings.
During the English Civil War, Soham was a Royalist stronghold, and was besieged by Parliamentarian troops in 1643. The town eventually fell, and was sacked by the Parliamentarians.
After the war, the town recovered slowly. In 1720, Nicholas Dynham was appointed as the town’s first writer, and helped to promote Soham’s history and culture.
The 19th century was a period of great change for Soham. In 1842, the Cambridge and Ely Railway was built, bringing increased trade and prosperity to the town. In 1864, Soham was formally incorporated as a municipal borough.
The 20th century saw further changes, with the growth of industry in the town. In 1948, Soham was merged with the nearby village of Fordham to form the new urban district of Soham and Fordham.
Today, Soham is a thriving market town with a population of around 11,000 people. The town has a number of historic buildings, including the 14th century Church of St. Andrew, and is home to a museum and heritage centre.
