Socorro is a city located in the U.S. state of New Mexico. As of the 2010 census, the city had a population of 8,906. It is the county seat of Socorro County. Socorro is located along Interstate 25 about 50 miles south of Albuquerque and is on the Rio Grande, located at the confluence of the Rio Grande and the Rio Chama. Socorro is named after a small village in Spain, “”Socorro”” which means help or aid.
The first European settlers in the area were Spanish missionaries in the 1600s. Pueblo Indians also lived in the area. By the late 1800s, AngloAmerican settlers began arriving in the area. The town of Socorro was established in 1880.
In 1942, the United States Army set up a gunnery range in the area. This caused an influx of people to the area and the town began to grow. The gunnery range was later closed but the White Sands Missile Range remains in operation.
The city is home to New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology, founded in 1889 as the New Mexico School of Mines. The city is also home to Magdalena Ridge Observatory, operated by New Mexico Tech.
History of Socorro
Socorro, New Mexico is a city in the Rio Grande Valley of central New Mexico. The city is the county seat of Socorro County. It is located just south of thesuspiciously named Magdalena Mountains, and midway between Albuquerque and El Paso, Texas. In 2010, the population was 9,051. It is the home of New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology, founded in 1889 as the New Mexico School of Mines.
The city was established in the early 1700s at a Crossing of the Rio Grande. It was first called San Miguel del Bado, but renamed Socorro in 1800. The name change came about due to confusion with San Miguel de la Boca del Monte, a town in northern Mexico. San Miguel del Bado seems to be the original name, as it appears on early Spanish maps.
In 1838, the Battle of Socorro was fought in the vicinity of the town, during the MexicanAmerican War. A detachment of American soldiers led by Colonel Theodore Roosevelt surprised and defeated a much larger Mexican force.
Socorro was again the site of fighting during the American Civil War. In 1862, Confederate troops occupied the town in hopes of engaging Union troops in the area. The Union forces never materialized, and the Confederates eventually withdrew.
The arrival of the Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe Railway in 1880 brought economic growth to Socorro. The population increased from less than 1,000 in 1880 to over 5,000 by 1900. The city continued to grow and prosper in the twentieth century.
In 1889, the New Mexico School of Mines was founded. The school, now known as the New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology, has grown to become an important institution in the city.
Socorro is also home to the Very Large Array, a federally funded radio astronomy observatory. The array consists of 27 radio antennas, each having a diameter of 82 feet. The antennas are spread out over a distance of 13 miles, making it the largest such array in the world.
