The history of Sioux Falls revolves around the cascades of the Big Sioux River. The falls were created about 14,000 years ago during the last ice age. The role of the falls has been changed by humans, who have used them for hydroelectric power, to support the local economy, and as a recreation destination.
The first inhabitants of the area were Native Americans. The falls were an important part of their lives. The Lakota people called the falls Čhaŋkpé Gatan or “roaring waters”.
