It is the primary city of the fivecounty Sioux City, IA–NE–SD Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA), with a population of 168,825 in 2010 and a 2019 estimated population of 168,492. The bulk of the city is in Woodbury County, of which it is the county seat, though a small portion is in Plymouth County to the east. Sioux City is the 101stlargest city by population in the United States (2020).

The city of Sioux City, Iowa is located on the Missouri River in the northwestern part of the state. It is the county seat of Woodbury County and the largest city in the Sioux City metropolitan area. The city was founded in 1854 by frontier lawyer, Dr. AlvinCooke, who named it after the Native American tribe that inhabited the area, the Sioux.
