History of Simi Valley
Simi Valley, in southwestern Ventura County, was founded in the late18th century as an agricultural outpost of the San Fernando Valley. The Santa Susana Mountains separate it from the San Fernando Valley to the south, and the Simi Hills protect it from the Conejo Valley to the north. The city’s name derived from the Chumash word, Shimiyi, meaning “little white cloud.”
The first Europeans to enter the area were the Spanish Portola expedition in 1769, when they traveled through the area on the way to establish the first Spanish mission in California at San Buenaventura. Padre Juan Crespi, a diarist on the expedition, noted in his journal that they found a native village near a spring and that the natives appeared friendly. The spring was later determined to be in the presentday city of Simi Valley.
In 1795, the Spanish established the Rancho Simi, a land grant covering much of the area now occupied by the cities of Simi Valley, Thousand Oaks, and Moorpark. The Spanish soldiers and families who settled the Rancho built the first permanent homes in the area around the spring in what is now central Simi Valley.
After Mexico’s independence from Spain in 1821, the Mexican government secularized the missions and divided their lands into large ranchos. Rancho Simi was given to Santiago Pico, son of Pio Pico, last Mexican governor of California. In 1842, Pico sold the rancho to Ysidro Ortiz, a Basque shepherd. Ortiz devoted himself to sheep ranching and cheese making on the property.
By 1844, the Mexican government had begun to encourage Americans to settle in California. California became a US state in 1850, and Americans began to acquire large ranchos from the Mexicans. In 1859, James Gearshart bought Rancho Simi from Ortiz and built a large adobe house called Los Arcos. The house, located on a rise northwest of today’s Simi Town Center, was the social center of the valley.
In 1863, the US Army established a post called Camp Stevens, north of Los Arcos, to protect settlers from raiding bands of Native Americans. A military road connecting the post to Los Angeles was built through the valley, and the stagecoach began operating along it in 1864. The first school in the valley was established at the camp in 1865.
After the American Civil War, many veterans moved to the West. In 1867, Marcus Oppenheimer, a German Jew, bought Rancho Simi from Gearshart and developed a successful calico printing business called Simi Valley Manufacturing Company. The Oppenheimers built a large Victorian mansion called Oakridge, which became another social center of the valley.
The population of the valley grew rapidly in the late19th century as more and more Americans settled there. In 1887, the effort to form a new county out of portions of Ventura and Santa Barbara Counties included a proposal to name the new county “Simco,” after the city of Simi Valley. The proposal was defeated, but the name “Simi” was later used for the new city of Simi Valley, which was incorporated in 1969.
