History of Silverton
Silverton is a city located in the southwestern part of the U.S. state of Oregon. The city is situated in the middle of the Silverton Hills, which explains its name. It is approximately 20 miles (32 km) eastsoutheast of downtown Salem, the state capital, and 30 miles (48 km) southwest of Mount Angel. Silverton has a councilmanager government. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 2.45 square miles (6.35 km2), all of it land.
Incorporated in 1885, Silverton became an important center of commerce in northwestern Marion County. The city has a long and varied history, starting with the Native Americans who inhabited the area long before white settlers arrived. The first Europeans in the area were trappers and hunters, but it was the discovery of gold in the 1850s that led to a major influx of prospectors and miners. Silverton was one of the first areas in the state to be settled by EuroAmericans, and it soon became an important stop on the Oregon Trail. The city grew rapidly during the early years of the 20th century, but the economy stagnated after the stock market crash of 1929.
The city began to rebound in the late 1940s, and has continued to grow and prosper since then. Today, Silverton is a thriving community with a diverse economy and a rich cultural heritage.
