Sherborne is a small, picturesque town located in the southwest of England in the county of Dorset. It’s just a short drive from the larger city of Bristol, and about two hours from London.Sherborne is most notable for its Abbey, a large and influential monastery founded in 705 AD by King Ine of Wessex. The Abbey dominated the town for centuries, and much of its architecture and history is still visible today. In 1539, the Abbey was dissolved by Henry VIII during the Dissolution of the Monasteries, and the town’s castle was built on its ruins. History of Sherborne
Sherborne is a historic market town located in the county of Dorset in southwest England. The town is situated on the River Yeo, a tributary of the River Thames. Sherborne is the administrative centre for the West Dorset district and North Dorset parliamentary constituency. The town has a population of 9,173 (2011 census).
The town is notable for its Abbey, Castle and several independent schools. Sherborne was the capital of Wessex from 871 to 874. The name derives from Old English scirburne meaning “clear stream” and referring to the River Yeo.
The town grew up around Sherborne Abbey, a Benedictine monastery founded in 705 by St Aldhelm, Bishop of Sherborne. In 933 King Æthelstan granted land at Sherborne to the Abbey. In 1058, an earthquake destroyed much of the town and damage was also caused by the Norman invasion of 1066. The castle was built by Roger de Montgomery in the late 11th century.
Today Sherborne is a thriving market town with a medieval street plan. The town has a number of historical buildings, including the Abbey, the Castle and several independent schools.
