History of Shelton
Shelton, Connecticut is located in New Haven County and is the most populous city in the town of Shelton. According to the 2010 census, the population of Shelton was 36,853. The formerly agricultural area was first settled as part of the town of Stratford in 1639. Shelton was split off as its own community in 1789, and incorporated as a city in 1915.
The Mathewson Lumber Company brought growth to the Shelton area in the mid 1800s with the construction of a sawmill along the Housatonic River. The mill complex grew to include several other industrial operations, and attracted a number of workers to the area. The railroad arrived in Shelton in 1852, furthering industrial development and population growth.
The downtown area of Shelton was devastated by a fire in August of 1881. The blaze destroyed over 60 businesses and left over 1,000 people unemployed. The city quickly rebuilt, and by the early 1900s Shelton was once again a thriving community.
The decades of the twentieth century were marked by continued growth and prosperity in Shelton. A number of large companies, such as Singer Sewing Machine Company and American Cord & Twine Company, set up operations in Shelton during this time. The city also developed a reputation for being a weekend getaway destination, due to its convenient location and scenic beauty.
