History of Shelbyville (Indiana)

Shelbyville, Indiana, is a midwestern city in the United States. The city is the county seat of Shelby County and is located in the central part of the state, about 30 miles southeast of Indianapolis. The population was 19,191 at the 2010 census.

The area now known as Shelbyville was first settled in 1822, when David and William Conner built a cabin on the banks of the Big Blue River. The town was originally called Connersville, but was renamed Shelbyville in 1823 in honor of Isaac Shelby, a hero of the Revolutionary War.

The city was officially platted in 1824, and Shelbyville was incorporated as a town in 1835. The first courthouse was built in 1826, and the first school was established in 1827.

The first railroad came to Shelbyville in 1852, and the city became an important stop on the Louisville & Nashville Railroad. Shelbyville was chartered as a city in 1865.
