History of Shelby
Incorporated in 1866, Shelby was named for Isaac Shelby, governor of Kentucky from 1792 to 1796 and again from 1812 to 1816. Shelby County was named for Gen. James Shelby, who fought in the American Revolution and the War of 1812. The area that became Shelby County was originally part of Tryon County, which was formed in 1768 from parts of Mecklenburg and Anson counties. The county was named for William Tryon, governor of the Province of North Carolina from 1765 to 1771.
The first European settlers in the Shelby area were ScotchIrish immigrants who arrived in the early 1700s. They settled along the First Broad River, in the area that is now uptown Shelby.
