History of Sheboygan

Sheboygan was originally inhabited by Native Americans of the Potawatomi tribe. The first European settlers were French fur traders, who established a trading post in the area in the late 1600s. In 1698, the French explorer Pierre Le Moyne d’Iberville visited the area and named the river on which the city is located “Rivière des Puans”, or “River of the Poopdoodles”. This name was eventually anglicized to “Pewauketon”, and the river was known by this name until the early 1800s.

The first permanent European settlers in the area were German immigrants, who began arriving in the early 1800s. In 1836, a group of German immigrants founded the city of Sheboygan Falls, which became the first permanent settlement in the area. Sheboygan Falls was later incorporated as a village in 1846 and as a city in 1853.

In 1846, the first post office in the area was established in Sheboygan Falls. The following year, the first church was built in the city.

In 1852, the first bridge across the Sheboygan River was built. This bridge connected Sheboygan Falls with the rest of the world and allowed for further growth of the community.
