History of Shawnee (Oklahoma)
PreEuropean Settlement
The first inhabitants of Shawnee, Oklahoma were Indigenous peoples who lived in the area for thousands of years before the arrival of Europeans. The Shawnee people, for whom the city is named, were just one of the many tribes who called the area home. Other tribes included the Quapaw, Osage, Chickasaw, and Cherokee.
The first European settlers to arrive in the area were French fur trappers and traders who came in the early 1800s. The French established a trading post near presentday Shawnee, which they called “Choteau’s trading post”. The trading post was named after its owner, Pierre Choteau Jr., who was a major player in the fur trade.
The United States gained control of the area in 1803 through the Louisiana Purchase, and the Lewis and Clark expedition passed through presentday Shawnee in 1804. In 1834, the federal government forced the Native American tribes to sign the Treaty of Camp Holmes, which resulted in the relocation of the Shawnee and other tribes to Indian Territory (presentday Oklahoma).
The Shawnee people established a new settlement in Indian Territory called “Shawneetown”. The town rapidly grew and became an important stop on the California Road, a major trail used by settlers headed west. Shawneetown became the county seat of Pottawatomie County in 1855.
During the Civil War, Shawneetown was split in its loyalty between the Union and the Confederacy. The town was occupied by both Union and Confederate troops at various times during the war.
PostCivil War
After the Civil War, Shawneetown began to decline in importance as the California Road fell into disuse and the Santa Fe Railroad bypassed the town. By the early 1900s, Shawneetown was a shadow of its former self, with a population of just over 500.
The town revived somewhat in the 1920s with the discovery of oil in the area. The oil boom led to an influx of new residents and the construction of new buildings. However, the Great Depression and another oil bust in the 1930s brought an end to the boom and Shawneetown once again declined.
Today, Shawnee is a small city with a population of around 30,000. Although it is no longer a major pioneer settlement, it still retains its historic character and is a popular destination for tourists and history buffs.
