The History of Schenectady, New York
Schenectady is a city located in Schenectady County, New York, United States. It is the county seat of Schenectady County. As of the 2010 census, the city had a population of 66,135. The name “Schenectady” is derived from a Mohawk word meaning “beyond the pines”.
The area was first settled by the Dutch in the early 17th century. The Village of Schenectady was incorporated in 1765. The City of Schenectady was chartered in 1798.
The Erie Canal was opened in 1825, and the Delaware and Hudson Railroad was completed in 1851. These transportation links helped to make Schenectady a major industrial center.
General Electric was founded in Schenectady in 1892, and the American Locomotive Company was headquartered here from 1901 to 1968.
