History of Scarsdale

Scarsdale is a town and village in Westchester County, New York. The town is the wealthiest suburb of New York City. The village is located within the town. As of the 2010 census, the town had a population of 17,166 and the village had a population of 18,363.

The town of Scarsdale is included within the hamlet of Eastchester.

The town was first settled in 1701 by William Bradford, a wealthy merchant from Philadelphia. Bradford purchased land from the local Siwanoy Indians and built a farmstead on what is now Mamaroneck Road.

The town was originally part of the town of White Plains, but was established as a separate town in 1788. The town was named after Philip Schuyler, a general in the American Revolution.

The village of Scarsdale was incorporated in 1913. The village is governed by a village board of trustees.

The town of Scarsdale is served by the Scarsdale Union Free School District. The district includes six elementary schools, Edgewood, Greenacres, Heathcote, Quaker Ridge, Ridgeway, and Saxon Woods; Scarsdale Middle School; and Scarsdale High School.
