History of Sawtry

Sawtry is a small village and civil parish located in the nonmetropolitan county of Cambridgeshire, England. The parish includes the villages of Chesterton, Ellington, Parnwell and Yaxley. The parish had a population of 5,972 at the 2011 census.

The name Sawtry is derived from the Old English words for “southerly town” or “south farmstead”. The Domesday Book of 1086 records that Sawtry consisted of eight manors, four of which were held by the King, three by the Bishop of Ely and one by Morcar, the Earl of Northumbria.

The village grew up around the 13th century Sawtry Abbey, a Cluniac monastery founded in 1115 by Roger, Earl of Huntingdon. The abbey was dissolved in 1536 during the Dissolution of the Monasteries by King Henry VIII.

Today, Sawtry is a typical English village with a green, a church and a pub. The village is situated on the A1(M), a major road running northsouth through England. Sawtry is also home to a number of businesses, including an industrial estate on the outskirts of the village.
