History of Sarasota
Sarasota is a city located in the southernmost part of the U.S. state of Florida. The area where the city is now located was originally inhabited by the native Indians who lived in the area for thousands of years before the first Europeans arrived. The first European to visit the area was Spanish explorer Hernando de Soto who arrived in 1539. However, it was not until the early 1800s that the area began to be settled by Americans.
One of the first American settlers in the area was William Whitfield who arrived in 1819 and built a log cabin near presentday downtown Sarasota. Whitfield was soon joined by other settlers who also built homes and businesses in the area. In 1821, the United States officially gained control of the area from Spain and it became part of the Territory of Florida. In 1845, Florida became the 27th state of the Union and Sarasota officially became a town in 1883.
In the early 1900s, the area began to experience a boom in growth due to the development of the railroad. This led to an influx of new residents and businesses to the area. Sarasota continued to grow throughout the 20th century and today it is a thriving city with a population of over 50,000 people. The city is home to a variety of businesses, cultural attractions, and natural beauty.
