History of Saranac Lake
Saranac Lake is a village in the Adirondack Park, located in Essex County, New York, United States. As of the 2010 census, the population was 5,406. The village is named after Upper, Middle and Lower Saranac lakes, which are nearby. The village of Saranac Lake covers parts of three towns (Harrietstown, St. Armand and North Elba) and two counties (Franklin and Essex). The county line runs across the middle of the village.
The area was first inhabited by Native Americans of the Algonquin nation, who called it “Katoraagonki” or “place of the silent spearing fish.” They had several villages in the area, including one at the outlet of Oseetah Lake, which they called “Saune distinction” or “Saune stacke.”
In 1761, the area was first surveyed by British troops and granted to a loyalist landowner, Peter Loop. But the area was left mostly undeveloped for many years because of the American Revolutionary War and the subsequent unsettled frontier.
In 1824, Ebenezer Emmons, an agent of the American Fur Company, explored the area and began to trap beaver and other game. In 1826, he built a log cabin on the bank of the Saranac River, near the present site of the Waterhole restaurant.
In 1827, George Washington Bainbridge, another fur trapper, came to the area and also built a cabin. In 1830, the first white child, John Elliot, was born in the area.
In 1843, a man named Anson Goodyear arrived in the area and founded the first hotel, the Saranac Inn. He also built a sawmill and gristmill, and began to attract other settlers.
In 1853, the Village of Saranac Lake was incorporated. In 1858, the Adirondack Iron and Steel Company was founded, and in 1859, the village got its first newspaper, the Saranac Lake Times.
The 1860s were a time of growth for the village. In 1862, the first church was built, and in 1865, the Adirondack Factory for the Insane (now the Adirondack Psychiatric Center) was established.
In 1873, the first bank was established, and in 1874, the first school was built. In 1875, the Adirondack Museum was founded, and in 1876, the first public library was established.
In the late 1800s, the village became a popular destination for wealthy businessmen and politicians from New York City, who built large summer homes in the area.
In the early 1900s, the village became known as a center for the treatment of tuberculosis. A number of sanatoriums were built in the area, and many patients came to the village to receive treatment.
In the mid1900s, the village began to decline as the tuberculosis epidemic ended and the wealthy summer residents began to build their homes elsewhere.
In the late 20th century, the village began to rebound as a tourist destination and a center for the arts. Today, the village is home to many art galleries, shops, restaurants, and hotels.
