History of Sapulpa

Sapulpa is a city in Creek County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 20,544 at the 2010 census, making it the county seat of Creek County. It is located approximately 27 miles southwest of downtown Tulsa, and is part of the Tulsa Metropolitan Area, a region with 951,561 residents in 2010.

The city was founded in 1898 by C.N. Sapulpa, a Railroad Superintendent for the Frisco Railroad. The name of the city is derived from the Creek word for “heart”, referring to the town’s location in the heart of Creek Nation.

Sapulpa became the county seat of Creek County in 1900 and has remained so ever since. The city was Incorporated in 1907.

The city has a long history of oil and gas production, dating back to the early 1900s when the Glenn Pool oil field was discovered just south of town. Sapulpa was once home to over 100 oil and gas related businesses, and was known as the “Oil Capital of the World”.

Today, Sapulpa is a diverse community with a strong focus on economic development. The city’s historic downtown district is home to a number of unique shops and restaurants, and the city is also home to a growing number of manufacturing and industrial businesses.
