Founded in 1833, Santa Rosa is a city in the heart of California’s Wine Country. The seventh largest city in Sonoma County, Santa Rosa is home to approximately 175,000 people. The city is just an hour north of San Francisco and is a gateway to the many wineries and vineyards in the region.
Santa Rosa was originally home to the native Miwok people. The Miwoks lived in small villages composed of huts made of willow branches and tree bark. They fished in the nearby rivers and gathered acorns to make flour. The Miwoks had a rich culture and were excellent basket weavers and arrow makers.
In 1833, Mexican settlers founded the town of Santa Rosa. The Mexican government had recently secularized the missions in California and was granted large tracts of land to distribute to settlers.
