History of Santa Barbara

The history of Santa Barbara, California, begins with the Chumash people, who settled the area around 13,000 years ago. They were subsequently replaced by the Tongva. Santa Barbara was claimed by Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo for Spain in 1542 along with the rest of what would become Alta California. The city of Santa Barbara was founded in 1786 by Spanish friars of the Mission Santa Barbara, which marked the beginning of the city’s Spanish period. The Longest continuous human presence in what is now Santa Barbara County are the Chumash people, who settled the immediate coast and interior about 9,000 years ago.
