History of Sand Springs
Sand Springs is a city in Tulsa County, Oklahoma, United States. It is located in the northeastern corner of the county, 16 miles (26 km) west of downtown Tulsa. The population was 18,906 in the 2010 census, an increase of 8.3 percent from 17,451 at the 2000 census. The 2019 estimated population was 20,144.
The city was founded in 1882 by Charles Page, a wealthy rancher from Kansas, who envisioned creating a model agricultural community. He chartered the Sand Springs Railway and built a flour mill, a cotton gin, and a cattle corral. The city was named after the springs that provided water for the new settlement.
Sand Springs became a bedroom community for Tulsa in the early 20th century. The city has a municipal airport, and the Sand Springs dialect of the Tulsa dialect of Oklahomans is spoken there.
The town incorporated in 1898 and dubbed itself “The city between the rivers” due to its location between Arkansas River and Caney River.
In 1905, Conoco oil company moved its refinery operations from Bartlesville to Sand Springs.
