History of San Pedro

This city was founded in the year 1542, by a Spanish explorer named Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo. He discovered the bay that would come to be known as San Pedro while on a mission to find a route from the Pacific Ocean to the Atlantic Ocean. Cabrillo named the bay San Pedro in honor of Saint Peter, the patron saint of fishermen.

The first permanent European settlement in the area was established in 1781, when a group of 44 Mexican families settled near the mouth of the Los Angeles River. They were soon joined by other settlers, and by 1800 the population of the small community was around 1,600.
