History of San Mateo
San Mateo is a city located in San Mateo County, California, United States. It is one of the larger suburbs on the San Francisco Peninsula, located between Burlingame to the north, Foster City to the east, Belmont to the south, and San Francisco Bay to the west. The city covers an area of 20.4 square miles (52.7 km2). San Mateo was first settled by the Spanish in 1776 as a part of the Rancho de las Pulgas, a large Mexican land grant covering much of modernday San Mateo County. The city was incorporated in 1894. The city’s position along the San Francisco Bay, midway between San Francisco and San Jose, makes it a natural home for many technology companies that have come to the area since the 1950s. San Mateo has a strong economy, with a retail sector that includes the San Mateo Highlands and Bridgepointe Shopping Centers. It also has a large healthcare and biotechnology industry. Despite this, San Mateo still has some agricultural land, mostly in the western hills.
The first recorded exploration of San Mateo County by Europeans was the visit of the Portolà expedition on October 31, 1769. San Mateo County was one of the original counties of California, created at the time of statehood in 1850. The county seat was originally located in Redwood City. The county’s leaders decided to move the county seat to San Mateo in 1857, after the county courthouse was destroyed in the 1856 San Francisco earthquake, and the county government was moved to San Mateo following a vote in 1858. The original county seat was located in what is now Old Courthouse Square in downtown San Mateo. The first courthouse was completed in 1859 and remodeled in 1880.
In 1889, Southern Pacific railroad tracks were extended north from San Jose through San Mateo to San Francisco, resulting in increased development and population in the area. The city was governed by a mayorcouncil system until 1927, when a charter was adopted to establish a commissionmanager form of government. During World War II, San Mateo was the site of the Santa Ana Army Air Base, which trained pilots and crews of bombers and transport planes. After the war, the base was converted to an immigrant holding center and then to a housing development. The census reported that 94,992 people (97.7% of the population) lived in households, and 1,889 (1.9%) lived in noninstitutionalized group quarters. There were 42,463 households, out of which 11,407 (26.9%) had children under the age of 18 living in them, 16,651 (39.2%) were oppositesex married couples living together, 3,964 (9.3%) had a female householder with no husband present, 1,758 (4.1%) had a male householder with no wife present. There were 2,151 (5.0%) unmarried oppositesex partnerships, and 299 (0.7%) samesex married couples or partnerships. 17,513
