History of San Marcos
Founded in 1869 as San Marcos Academy, San Marcos is a city in the North County region of San Diego County. It is the site of California State University San Marcos (CSUSM). The city is bordered by Escondido to the east, Encinitas to the southwest, Carlsbad to the west, and Vista to the northwest.
San Marcos was first inhabited by the Kumeyaay people. Spanish explorers arrived in the early 18th century and called the area Los Vallecitos de San Marcos (Little Valleys of St. Mark), referring to the many small springs in the area. In 1842, the Mexican government granted the land to Juan María Osuna.
During the Mexican–American War, the Battle of San Pasqual was fought nearby on December 6, 1846. It was the only major battle in California during the war.
In 1848, the United States annexed the area, which became part of the California Gold Rush country. San Marcos was home to several large ranches, and in the late 19th century, it became a farming community.
The San Marcos Land Company was formed in 1906, and the city of San Marcos was incorporated in 1963. The city has grown rapidly since the 1970s, and CSUSM opened in 1989.
San Marcos is served by two newspapers, the North County Times and The Daily Transcript. The city is also home to an arts and culture scene, with several art galleries, live music venues, and theaters.
