History of San Juan Capistrano
San Juan Capistrano is a city in the southern part of Orange County, California, about 34 miles (55 km) southeast of downtown Los Angeles. The current OMB metropolitan designation for San Juan Capistrano and the Orange County Area is “Santa AnaAnaheimIrvine, CA.” The population was 34,593 at the 2010 census, up from 33,826 at the 2000 census.
The site was the home of a mission founded by Father Junipero Serra in 1776, and a subsequent village by the same name. It is part of the Mission Vieja area (“old mission”) of Alta California, and had a population of 1,640 in 1800. San Juan Capistrano was the sixth mission established during Serra’s “holy experiment” in colonial government, and it was the only one of the 21 missions to remain under the control of the Catholic Church since the Mexican secularization act of 1833.
