History of San Francisco

San Francisco is a city with a long and varied history.

The first European to visit the area was Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo, who sailed into San Francisco Bay in 1542. The bay was soon visited by other Spanish explorers, and in 1769, the Spanish established a fort and mission at the Presidio of San Francisco. The city that grew up around the mission was called Yerba Buena.

In 1846, during the MexicanAmerican War, Yerba Buena was captured by American forces led by Commodore John D. Sloat. The Americans renamed the city San Francisco, and it quickly became an important port city.

The discovery of gold in California in 1848 led to a huge influx of people to San Francisco, and the city grew rapidly. It soon became a center of commerce and culture.

In 1906, a major earthquake and fire destroyed much of the city. However, San Francisco was quickly rebuilt, and today it is one of the most beautiful and vibrant cities in the world.
