History of Sallisaw

The area around the present city of Sallisaw was inhabited by Native American tribes for centuries before the arrival of the Europeans. The most notable tribe in the area was the Cherokee tribe. The Cherokee tribe had a village in the area which they called Salisan or Salli. The meaning of the word Salli is unknown but it is believed to be a Cherokee word for “blackberry”.

The first Europeans to arrive in the area were the French explorers in the early 18th century. The French explorers named the stream running through the area as Riviere de Salle. The area was included in the Louisiana Purchase in 1803 and became part of the United States.
